YOI Beta Signups/Beta Requests

Need a Beta?

banner by [personal profile] shades_of_hades

The Mods have noticed that quite a few members have signed up for the Rare Ships on Ice Exchange, which we are very excited about! It can be hard to find a good beta reader, especially in a new fandom like YOI. Therefore, we have decided to facililate the process by offering a beta signup/request post. If you need a beta for your RSOI fic or any other YOI fic, please fill out the beta request form below. If you're good with SPAG or just enjoy reading YOI fic and editing in general, consider offering your beta services by filling out the beta volunteer form. If you have any questions, feel free to respond to this post.

Good luck finding a beta and thanks in advance to anyone who volunteers. The mods actually met through a beta forum years ago and became good friends, so we know how important the beta/writer relationship can be!

How do you want to be contacted?:Email to sandyjustine at gmail
Maximum rating you are willing to beta: Explicit
Any squicks or types of stories, tropes, or pairings you won't beta: Death or betrayal stories are a no; ask about your really extreme BDSM
Maximum length of fic you are willing to beta: I can turn around up to about ~7K-word chunks at a time
How much time do you need: Depends, but usually within the day for concept/plot/characterization, a couple days if you want grammar help
Your past experiences and strengths as a beta: I've been in fandom for about 20 years now, writing and beta-ing intermittently, and have worked as an editor and writing teacher in RL.
Would you be willing to work on long term projects or WIPs: Sure!
Do you use gdocs? If not, what file formats do you prefer to work in: Gdocs or Word are probably best, but anything is fine.

Maximum rating you are willing to beta: Explicit
Any squicks or types of stories, tropes, or pairings you won't beta: No BDSM, no daddy!kink, no watersports/scat, no PWP. Pairings - No JJ, everyone else is good!
Maximum length of fic you are willing to beta: I can do 5K at a time, longer stories, WIPS, one-shots, etc.
How much time do you need: Depends on the length. 10K? About 2 days.
Your past experiences and strengths as a beta: I've been in the Buffy, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Sherlock fandoms for a combined 20+ years. Fluent in American and British English, including the idioms, grammar, and spelling. Have written over 80 stories on AO3 and FanFic.net. Was an accredited beta on Granger Enchanted before it went defunct. Discussion of plot devices, plot holes, flow of story, direction you want to head as a writer.
Would you be willing to work on long term projects or WIPs: Sure!
Do you use gdocs? If not, what file formats do you prefer to work in: I can use Gdocs, but it's not my favorite. Doc. or DOCX. files are fine.

How do you want to be contacted?:send me a pm and tell me about your fic
Maximum rating you are willing to beta: Any
Any squicks or types of stories, tropes, or pairings you won't beta: I'm not really fond of non-con or A/B/O dynamics, but if you can't find a beta, I'd help with pretty much everything as long as it's not too long.
Maximum length of fic you are willing to beta: No longer than 5-10K unless you give me a decent amount of time (1 week +)
How much time do you need: It depends how thorough you want me to be. If you only want me to do a quick spag check, then only a day or 2 for up to 5k. A weekend for 10K. If you want a more thorough job, then I'll need a bit more time.
Your past experiences and strengths as a beta: I've been a beta reader for several years, mostly for the HP and Sherlock fandoms. I've always liked SPAG because I'm a big nerd and used to help proofread articles for my university paper. I'd say SPAG is my strength, but I can help with characterization, word choice, plot, structure, etc.
Would you be willing to work on long term projects or WIPs: Probably not because I'm already a long term beta for several people, but for the right project you might change my mind. = D
Do you use gdocs? If not, what file formats do you prefer to work in: I actually prefer to work in Microsoft Word and track changes/comments because gdocs is a bit annoying for commenting on my small laptop screen, but I use gdocs all the time too.

How do you want to be contacted? (by email or pm): E-mail's easiest - idle.leaves at gmail dot com.
Maximum rating you are willing to beta: Explicit
Any squicks or types of stories, tropes, or pairings you won't beta: Squicks would be a/b/o, infidelity, humiliation, and daddy!kink. I'm uninformed about BDSM so I might be useless for that beyond SPaG.
Maximum length of fic you are willing to beta: Depends! For SPaG, the sky's the limit. For characterisation/pacing/etc. I max out at about 10k.
How much time do you need: Less than 5k I can do in a day or two; 10k might take a weekend. Longer than that - give me about a week.
Your past experiences and strengths as a beta: I've been in fandom for coming up on two decades and have done quite a lot of beta work (and writing of my own). SPaG is something I'm good at, as well as word choice and flow and such.
Would you be willing to work on long term projects or WIPs: Sure.
Do you use gdocs? If not, what file formats do you prefer to work in: I prefer gdocs, but I can also handle Word (.doc, .docx), OpenDocument (.odt) or Rich Text (.rtf).
